Amarillo Bulls News Release
BLAINE, MN - The second games at the North American Hockey League Showcase have traditionally not gone well for the Amarillo Bulls, and that was the case on Thursday night.
The Bulls surrendered three first-period goals, including two in 1:26 span and dropped a 5-3 decision to the Wenatchee Wild. Amarillo evened its record to 1-1 at the Showcase and dropped to 1-2 lifetime on the second day at the event.
"We have to learn to compete each shift in each period, and we didn't do that tonight," said Bulls Head Coach Dennis Williams. "When you are playing a good team like Wenatchee, you can't afford to give them power plays and we talked about that before the game. We also can't afford to turn pucks over which we did and they capitalized.
"They are a fast hockey team which moves the puck well, and they competed harder than we did tonight and they were the better team."
After the Bulls fell behind 3-0, they put together a better 2nd period and attempted to chip away at the deficit. TJ Sarcona scored on a rebound in front of the net from Omar Mullan at 14:57, and Amarillo was within two heading into the final 20 minutes of play.
The Wild scored two more quick goals in the third period to put the game out of reach. One was scored shorthanded, and the second on a 4 on 4. The Bulls rallied with two more - to again bring the deficit back to a pair. Joe Grabowski scored from Ryan Cole and Clint Carlisle. Geoff Fortman rounded out the scoring when he completed a feed from Clint Carlisle. Cole and Carlisle finished the game each with two helpers.
Collin Delia started the game for the Bulls, but was replaced early in the third period by Paul Berrafato.
"Our guys didn't give up at all in the game and that is what I like to see," Williams said. "I told them after the second that win or lose I don't care. I want to see them execute and stick to the game plan. If we can do that for 20 minutes, then whatever happens; happens. I was happy that we did that in the third period."
The Amarillo Bulls will look to rebound in game three of the NAHL Showcase tomorrow (Friday) afternoon when they take on the Port Huron Fighting Falcons. Fans can tune into the action with Denis J. Puska, beginning at 1 pm on ESPN1440 and www.amarillobulls.com. The puck drop follows at 1:15 pm. The game is also available on Pay Per View courtesy of Fast Hockey and a high speed internet connection is required in order to view the game.
