Johnstown Tomahawks News Release
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - To celebrate the return of hockey to Johnstown, the Tomahawks are pleased to host the First Annual HockeyFest presented by Bud Light on Sept. 29 before the team's inaugural home game, for which NHL legend Mario Lemieux will drop the ceremonial puck.
The Tomahawks, in conjunction with the Cambria County War Memorial Arena and the city of Johnstown, will shut down Napoleon Street for the hockey-themed festivities, which will include a celebrity street hockey game featuring former Chiefs players, food and beer vendors, games, and contests that begin at 4:30 p.m. and lead up to the game at 7:30 p.m.
The organization will kick off the start of the Tomahawks first season in the NAHL with local band Day Well Spent, which will play live during the event. Kids will have the opportunity to make signs for the game, have their faces painted, and meet the Tomahawks mascot, Chopper. Fans will also be able to participate in shooting contests, enjoy food and beer, and take shots at a target in order to "Dunk Charlie for Charity," for which Charles "Chicken" Johnson will kindly sacrifice himself to a dunk tank full of water for the newly-formed Johnstown Tomahawks Foundation, benefitting local charities and non-profit organizations.
The team also announced today that WJAC Chief Meteorologist Jim Burton will serve as the honorary PA announcer for the inaugural home game. Burton, a Newfoundland native, has been sharing his talents with Johnstown for the past 14 years after graduating from Carnegie Mellon University and working in Washington D.C. and Philadelphia in both television and radio.
The Tomahawks, who are current in Blaine, Minn. for the annual NAHL Showcase, will return home to Johnstown next week before hitting the ice for their first game at the War Memorial. The team will face off against the division-rival Michigan Warriors. For additional information, please call 814-536-4625, email info@johnstowntomahawks.com, or visit www.JohnstownTomahawks.com .
