Providence Bruins News Release
The Providence Bruins announced today that they have signed left wing Tomas Kurka to an AHL conract for the remainder of the 2004-05 season. Kurka, who turned 23 on Tuesday, had been playing with Litvinov of the Czech Elite League, near his hometown of Most, Czech Republic. He had 1-5-6 totals in 29 games. Kurka is expected to make his Bruins debut on Friday night at 7:05 p.m., when the Bruins host the Springfield Falcons.
"Tomas is a young, skilled player who already has three years of experience in the AHL with Lowell, as well as some NHL experience with Carolina," said Bruins head coach Scott Gordon. "We know that he is excited to be back playing in North America, and we think that he will give us added offensive depth up front."
Kurka was originally selected by the Carolina Hurricanes with their first pick, 32nd overall, in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. He left the Czech Republic to play junior hockey in the Ontario Hockey League, posting 51-57-108 totals in 111 games with the Plymouth Whalers from 1999-2001. Kurka spent his first professional season with the Lowell Lock Monsters in 2001-02, notching 13-15-28 totals in 71 games. He led Lowell with 17 goals in 2002-03, while also notching three goals and five points in 14 NHL games with Carolina. Kurka has 36-53-89 totals in 187 career AHL games. He has 3-2-5 totals in 17 career NHL games.
Friday's game marks the conclusion of the Bruins' Toys for Tots Drive. Bruins wives and girlfriends will be collecting unopened toys in the Dunkin' Donuts Center box office lobby from 5:45 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. All toys collected will be donated to the U.S. Marines Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program.
