Portland Pirates News Release

PORTLAND, ME – The Portland Pirates and the Cumberland County Civic Center and National Distributors announced today that they will implement the "Good Sport" program at Cumberland County Civic Center designed to encourage fans to continue to act responsibly and respect the rights of others while attending Pirates games. The program will kick off this weekend at the Pirates game on Saturday against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at 7:05 p.m.

Brian Williams, the Pirates President/COO says Good Sport will help maintain a wholesome, family

atmosphere at the Cumberland County Civic Center. "The cornerstone of our efforts is Good Sport," Williams says.

"Established as a result of our partnership with National Distributors and Anheuser-Busch, Inc., Good Sport is a comprehensive action plan that will continue the tradition of Pirates hockey games being enjoyable, family entertainment. Good Sport is our pledge to the community that everyone attending a Pirates game at Cumberland County Civic Center will have a good time, but not at the expense of others."

The Pirates will have a Designated Driver sign up booth on Friday and Saturday night games. Under the designated

driver program, one person from a group attending the game volunteers to refrain from drinking alcohol and is responsible for providing transportation for the rest of the group. The first 50 designated drivers to sign up get a giveaway and entered into the nightly drawing and the first 50 people who pledge during the game will receive a free Bud Light NHL rally towel. After the first 50, then the following people who pledge are entered into the nightly drawing for Pirates prizes, such as an autographed hockey stick, autographed jersey or tickets to a future game tickets. The Designated Drivers are required to sign an Anheuser-Busch recommended pledge form in order to be entered in the drawing.

"The vast majority of the thousands of fans who attend Pirates games are responsible and Good Sport provides Cumberland County Civic officials with the tools necessary to prevent someone who may have had too much to drink from driving," Williams says. "Good Sport is a rock-solid program that will help continue our tradition of providing a wholesome, fan-friendly environment at Pirates games. Being a Good Sport means everyone must join together as a team -- the Pirates, Cumberland County Civic Center staff and our fans -- to ensure that good sense and good times are one of the featured attractions at the Cumberland County Civic Center," Williams says.

"The Cumberland County Civic Center is extremely pleased to participate in the Good Sport program in partnership with the Portland Pirates and National Distributors. We are all very pleased to work together to insure and promote safe and responsible drinking and promote a family atmosphere for Pirates hockey games," said Steve Crane, the Cumberland County Civic Center General Manager.
