Austin Bruins News Release
After a slow start, the Austin Bruins (7-1-0) routed the Brookings Blizzard (0-7-1) 11-1 in the Bruins home opener in front of a great crowd at Riverside Arena in Austin Saturday night.
Brookings opened up the scoring in the first period, when Conor Andrle (St. Louis Park, MN) beat Nick Lehr (Roseville, MN) on a breakaway while on the power-play. After trailing for just over ten minutes, Luke Dietsch (St. Paul, MN) tied the game for Austin on a wraparound that went through the five-hole of Blizzard goaltender Austin Priebe (Wausau, WI). Back-to-back power-play goals by Jay Dickman (Shoreview, MN) and Dietsch in the final minutes made it 3-1 Bruins after one.
The floodgates opened in the second period, when the Blizzard brought out backup goaltender Miguel Genest (Montreal, Quebec) to start the frame. Bruins veteran Austin Nelson (Hastings, MN) made it 4-1 with a top-shelf wrist shot. Then Guillaume Leclerc (Franois, France) got into the act with what would be his first of three goals in the game. After the Blizzard brought Priebe back in, Sam Kauppila (Leainee, IL) made it 6-1, and Leclerc upped the lead to 7-1 before the second intermission.
In the third, Austin poured it on with four more goals against Genest and a depleted Brookings squad, with Leclerc, Nelson, Brennan Sanford (Holt, MI), and Easton Viitala (Marquette, MI) notching goals. Josh Bretner (North Potomac, MD) finished the game with three assists, and Lehr stopped 23 Blizzard shots in his sixth victory of the season.
The Bruins will have next Friday off, while the Blizzard host Bismarck, and then Austin and Brookings will meet again Saturday, October 12 at Riverside Arena.
