Amarillo Bulls News Release
WICHITA FALLS, TX - A streak that has lasted nearly three seasons came to an end on Friday night. Kyle Gattelaro scored in sudden death shooters to lift the Amarillo Bulls past the Wichita Falls Wildcats 1-0 at Kay Yeager Coliseum.
The Bulls had lost 14 straight shootouts dating back to their last win in October of 2010 which was their first season in the North American Hockey League.
The story in the game on Friday night was goaltender Collin Delia who was spectacular in goal stopping all 33 shots he faced plus all six players in the shootout. The victory extended the Bulls winning streak to three games and improved their mark to 4-2-1. Delia and Berrafato have not allowed a goal in more than 150 minutes of action dating back to the second period of last Friday's game versus the Odessa Jackalopes.
"Collin Delia won us the game tonight," said Bulls Head Coach Dennis Williams. "He was our best player on the ice. It was a good win for our guys, even though I don't know if we were deserving of it." The boys battled and competed hard, never gave up and found a way to win. But we need to do a better job in the third period of generating shots. That is a record for us for shots in a period of play."
It was an exciting opening 20 minutes that was dominated by the goaltenders. Collin Delia had some solid saves in the Bulls net, including a partial breakaway stop late in the stanza. There were three power plays with the Wildcats having two of them but not being able to generate much offense. The Bulls were outshot by the Wildcats 9-7.
The second period featured more special teams with a total of seven power plays. There was still no scoring but both teams with great chances to score. Each team had eight shots on goal in the second period.
It was a rough final 20 minutes for the Amarillo Bulls which managed just two shots on goal. One of them was a partial breakaway by Mike Davis who was stopped late in the game by Chase Munroe who like Delia also had a solid effort between the pipes.
There were just three shots in overtime. Cody Gylling gave the Bulls lead after three rounds in the shootout, but the Wildcats forced sudden death shooters in the fifth and final round. Kyle Gattelaro came up in round seven and beat Munroe on the stick side.
A total of 10 power plays took place in the contest with each team going 0 for 5. The Wichita Falls Wildcats outshot the Amarillo Bulls 33-17.
The two teams will close out the weekend series tomorrow (Saturday) night at Kay Yeager Coliseum with the face-off at approximately 7:20 pm due to a pre-game ceremony. The game is aired live on CBS Sports Radio 1440, www.amarillobulls.com and on PPV courtesy of Fast Hockey beginning with the Wayland Baptist University Warm-Up Show at 6:55 pm. Denis J. Puska has the play-by-play call to follow.
