Bruins Power Past Sound Tigers 7-3

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Feb. 15, 2013) - The Providence Bruins scored four times in a period of 6:13 which spanned the first and second periods and never looked back as they defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 7-3 at the Dunkin Donuts Center on Friday night. With the win, the Bruins improve to 28-17-0-3. The loss snaps the Sound Tigers' three-game winning streak as they fall to 22-20-2-3.
The Bruins took advantage of an early Sound Tigers turnover and took a 1-0 lead just 2:05 into the game, when Trent Whitfield one-timed a pass from Graham Mink past goaltender Kevin Poulin.
The Sound Tigers responded 4:27 later to draw even. Brock Nelson was knocked down in the slot as he tried to fire a shot on net, but the puck came right to the stick of Matt Donovan. Donovan sent a shot from the left circle past Providence goaltender Niklas Svedberg for his eight goal of the season to tie the game at one.
Providence scored twice in a span of 44 seconds late opening frame to seize momentum and take a two-goal lead. The Sound Tigers looked to kill a Matt Watkins penalty and blocked a point shot, but the puck deflected right to Jordan Caron. Caron found Christian Hanson all alone on the slot as a result of the broken play, and Hanson sent a one-timer past Poulin to give the Bruins a 2-1 lead. Kyle MacKinnon pushed the Bruins lead to two at 19:37, deflecting a low shot through traffic that made its way beneath Poulin's pads.
The Bruins would earn another power play just 38 seconds into the middle period when Nino Niederreiter was called for hooking and increased their lead on the man-advantage. Ryan Spooner sent a pass through the low slot to Craig Cunningham at the left circle, and Cunningham beat Poulin for his 12th goal of the season to give Providence a 4-1 lead. Caron's goal on a rebound at 5:08 off the second stanza put the Bruins ahead by a score of 5-1, and Poulin was pulled at that point in favor of Kenny Reiter after allowing five goals on 17 shots. The Sound Tigers would control much of the play through the remainder of the second period, but couldn't solve Svedberg as Providence maintained its four-goal lead.
Jamie Tardif's deflection on the power play at 2:52 of the final period gave the Bruins a 6-1 lead, and Lane MacDermid's shorthanded breakaway goal 1:05 later pushed Providence's lead to six. The Sound Tigers would close out the scoring with two goals in a 1:25 span. Sean Backman deflected Brock Nelson's shot at 13:16 for his sixth goal of the season, and Brandon DeFazio scored on a shorthanded odd-man rush at 14:41 for his eighth tally of the year.
The Sound Tigers and Bruins will close out their home-and-home series tomorrow evening when they drop the puck at Webster Bank Arena at 7:00 p.m.
NOTES: The Bruins were awarded five power plays before the Sound Tigers earned their first power play of the game on a Trent Whitfield hooking penalty with 5:00 left in the second period ... Friday's game was the
first time Poulin had been pulled since a 6-1 loss at Binghamton on Nov. 24, 2012 ... Poulin has started 10 of the Sound Tigers last 11 games ... Max MacKay returned to the lineup for the first time in two months after being sidelined with a lower body injury as well as a bout with the flu ... Both teams scored shorthanded goals; Providence was 3-for-7 on the power play, the Sound Tigers went 0-for-3 ... Ty Wishart assisted on Backman's goal and has a career-high five-game point streak ... Seven different players scored for the Bruins.
