Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI -- The Providence Bruins improve to (19-13-0-2) with a win against the Manchester Monarchs this afternoon at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Craig Cunningham and Graham Mink each tallied a goal and Niklas Svedberg made 24 saves in the victory.
A depleted Providence roster did not hesitate to get in the game and opened the scoring almost as soon as the puck dropped. Manchester attempted to bring the puck out of their defensive zone but misplayed the puck allowing Cunningham to pick up the loose puck in the slot and backhand it into just 58 seconds into the game on the first shot of the game. Svedberg did not have many shots he needed to save the first half of the period but came up with a huge pad save with about 11 minutes to go. Once the P-Bruins got into some penalty trouble with two penalties within the last five minutes of the period was Svedberg really tested by the Monarchs shelling him with pucks. Svedberg was solid between the pipes in a fast final minute of the period as he and his team were killing off a penalty to keep the score at 1-0 heading into the intermission.
Both teams skated hard and played a disciplined game in the second period with no penalties called. The two teams skated back and forth down the ice exchanging shots on goal for the period's entirety. The final shots in the period were almost an even split at 12-11 in favor of Providence. The P-Bruins had their best chance with two minutes to go in the period when Maxime Sauvé and Carter Camper had a 2-on-1. Sauvé made the pass to Camper and he put it on net but was denied with a pad save by Peter Mannino. The Monarchs had the next best chance putting a lot of pressure on Svedberg in the final minute of play and Brandon Kozun beat the goaltender with a wrist shot right into the top corner of the net blocker side with 9 seconds to go in the period to tie the game.
Providence came out with determination in the third period, getting chances early on. It did not take long for the P-Bruins to get the go ahead goal from one of their newest team members Mink, making his home debut after signing a professional tryout contract on Saturday. After an initial set up from Camper, Sauve positioned himself in the right faceoff circle and shot the puck and Mink tucked in the rebound under Mannino's right leg pad. Providence continued to dominate the period with shots outshooting Manchester 16-4 in the period but Mannino (39 saves) stood strong preventing them from adding to their lead until he was pulled late in the game. Sauvé had a chance on the empty net but a Monarchs player knocked the puck away and to the other end of the ice. Immediately following that Tanner Pearson went right in on Svedberg and Svedberg had to move quick to cover up the puck completely bent forward against the right post. Neither team would score again before time expired and Providence held on to win 2-1 bringing the season series to 4-2-0-0.
