5 Phantoms Recalled by Philadelphia Flyers
January 13, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Adirondack Phantoms News Release
The Philadelphia Flyers have announced that five players have been recalled from the Adirondack Phantoms, according to general manager Paul Holmgren. Joining the 26-player training camp roster in Voorhees, NJ will be Sean Couturier, Tye McGinn, Zac Rinaldo, Brayden Schenn and Eric Wellwood.
The five players have all been scratched from the lineup the past two games this weekend while they were already in Voorhees preparing for the camp which started today. Philadelphia opens their NHL regular season on Saturday against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Sean Couturier (31 GP, 10-18-28, 16 PIM) concluded his stay with the Phantoms in impressive fashion. The 20-year-old center slammed home the game-winner in overtime on January 5th against the Connecticut Whale in a 2-1 thriller. His goal came in the same building where he first attended a hockey game as a baby. His Dad, Syvlain Couturier, played for the Adirondack Red Wings in 1992 shortly after Sean was born. Couturier scored 13 goals in 77 games with Philadelphia last year and then added a hat trick in a playoff game against Pittsburgh.
Tye McGinn (30 GP, 9-4-13, 52 PIM) has increased his scoring production this year and has found a home in front of the net using his big body to screen goalies and dig out rebounds. McGinn is the only one of the group who has not played in the NHL but his success in the first half of this season has earned him the opportunity in this camp. His older brother, Jamie McGinn, plays in the NHL for the Colorado Avalanche.
Zac Rinaldo (31 GP, 2-3-5, 92 PIM) used his time back in the American Hockey League to work on additional aspects to his game. Last year he spent most of the season with Philadelphia racking up 232 PIM in 66 games. The year before that, as a 20-year-old rookie with the Phantoms, he had 331 PIM in 60 games.
Brayden Schenn (33 GP, 13-20-33, 15 PIM) was the top scorer on the Phantoms this year. The #5 overall selection in the 2009 draft by the Los Angeles Kings now gets to join his brother, Luke Schenn, who was acquired by the Flyers from the Maple Leafs in the off-season. Schenn's season highlight with Adirondack came on November 14, 2012 when he registered a hat trick against the Manchester Monarchs and the organization that had traded him a couple summers ago. Schenn had 12 goals with Philadelphia last season in 54 games and also 6 more with the Phantoms in just 7 games.
Eric Wellwood (29 GP, 4-5-9, 6 PIM) had a good stretch recently of three goals in four games as he got his scoring touch back on track. Last year with Philadelphia he played in 24 games scoring 5-4-9 and also played in 11 playoff games. The 22-year-old had also scored 4 goals with the Phantoms in 29 games in the AHL. Wellwood's debut season in 2010-11 he scored 16 goals with Adirondack. His older brother, Kyle Wellwood, is an NHL veteran of 450 games currently with the Winnipeg Jets.
