Swift Current Broncos News Release
Swift Current, Sask - The Swift Current Broncos (2-7-0-0) threw everything they could at the Lethbridge Hurricanes (5-7-0-0) net in the final seconds of regulation, but couldn't buy the tying goal a dropped their fourth straight game, 3-2.
Lethbridge opened the scoring early when Swift Current native Joe Arntsen crept in from the blue line on the power play, took a centring pass and beat Reid Dyck on the blocker side 3:44 into the game.
The Broncos ramped up the pressure following the goal and eventually pulled even. Josh Davies outmuscled two Lethbridge defenders along the boards and sent the puck to the blue line for Adam McNutt. His quick snap shot sailed past a screened Jared Picklyk for McNutt's first of the year to tie the game 8:52 into the first period.
After killing off two penalties following the goal, the Broncos went to their first power play of the night, but it was the Hurricanes taking advantage. Lethbridge was able to force the puck to centre and Cole Shepard ended up on a breakway. He outwaited Dyck and slid the puck along the ice to restore Lethbridge's lead with 1:21 left in the first.
The Hurricanes took the 2-1 lead into the intermission, outshooting Swift Current 12-10.
Swift Current tied the game again following a turnover at the Lethbridge bench. Davies gathered the puck and skated down the left wing, cutting across the Hurricanes crease but was denied by Picklyk. Owen Pickering was following up the play and poked the rebound in, scoring his first goal of the season 5:12 into the second.
The Hurricanes outshot the Broncos 13-8 in the second period, but Dyck stood his ground in the Bronco crease to get his team to the intermission on even terms.
Shepard scored his second of the night mid-way through the third period, looping around the Broncos zone before firing a shot over the blocker of Dyck from the right circle to put Lethbridge back on top 3-2.
Swift Current started a full-court press after the goal, generating a plethora of scoring chances as the clock was ticking down. Dyck went to the bench for the extra attacker and the Broncos received a power play moments later, setting up a 6-on-4 finish.
The Broncos peppered the Hurricanes net with shots, but Picklyk and Joe Arntsen combined to somehow keep the puck out of the net despite a furious push, sealing a 3-2 Hurricanes win.
Swift Current now looks to their first mid-week game of the season, and a chance at redemption with the Hurricanes returning to the InnovationPlex on Wednesday.
Announced attendance was 1,734.
