The Story:
The Winterhawks struck twice in the third but early struggles cost them in an eventual 7-3 loss to the Tri-City Americans on Saturday.
The bounces were all friendly for the hosts in the first period as the Americans quickly raced out to a 5-1 lead through 20 minutes. Marek Alscher's first of the season put Portland on the board, but Tri-City's Tyson Greenway (2), Adam Mechura, Deagan McMillan and Jake Sloan each found twine for the hosts. Greenway capped off his hat trick in the second period to make it 6-1.
The third period featured the Winterhawks we've seen for much of the year, though, as the team controlled play and Alex Thompson and newly-anointed captain Gabe Klassen each lit the lamp to halve the score, but the comeback bid was too little, too late. Thompson's tally was a deflection of a Marcus Nguyen shot as the young defenseman showed good hockey IQ to drive the center lane and create the chance.
Dante Giannuzzi and Jan Špunar combined for 13 saves in the loss, while Tri-City's Tomas Suchanek stopped 35 of 38 for the win.
Portland returns home for a pair of back-to-back games against the Kelowna Rockets on Oct. 28 and 29.
QUOTE OF THE NIGHT presented by BBF TECHNOLOGIES:
"Last week I thought I started upping my compete, trying to be the best I can and I'm starting to see improvement and getting better and this is just the start."
Winterhawks defenseman Alex Thompson
