Broncos Beat Up WhiteWings

July 23, 2007 - United League Baseball (ULB) - Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

Laredo, TX - First half champion Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings (36-32, 7-12) starter Danny Bonilla (2-7) was pitching well into the fifth, but three errors in the inning led to a seven-run, eleven-batter en slaught the Laredo Broncos (28-40, 9-11) won 9-3 tonight at Veterans Field.

Luis Ramos started it off with a perfect push bunt to the left side for a hit. Randy Rosa put down a sacrifice bunt, but Bonilla bobbled it and Ramos went to third. Rosa stole second, and one batter later Pedro Lopez hit an RBI-single. Edwin Maldonado did the same. Juan Lebron hit a foul infield pop-up, but Miguel Peguero dropped the ball, allowing the at-bat to continue and Lebron to walk. Javier Lopez followed with two-run double to knock out Bonilla. Bobby Darling came in and walked Ivan Reyes. Ball four was a wild pitch, scoring Lebron and moving Lopez to third. Cameron McGuire hit a grounder to third. Fox held the runner and threw to first for the out, at which point both runners took off. Alejandro Martinez tried to throw out Ivan Reyes, but it got away, allowing Reyes to be safe at third. Randy Rosa capped the inning with an RBI-single, making it 9-1 at the time.

Jose Cordero (6-4) was wild in the top of the first, as he walked four batters. Thanks in part to a caught stealing, though, the WhiteWings were unable to score.

Cordero continued to struggle in the second, giving up a hit and a walk, but used a pick off to escape.

In the third, the WhiteWings finally took advantage of an opportunity Fox was hit by a 2-2 pitch with two outs. He tried to steal second, but Randy Rosa's throw was in plenty of time, causing Fox to stop short of the base. Pedro Lopez couldn't handle the throw and let it go into center field, allowing Fox to go to third. Brian Nichols singled him to make it 1-0.

The Broncos broke through against Bonilla in the bottom of the frame as Lopez was hit by a pitch with two outs and Maldonado followed with his eighth home run of the season to make it 2-1.

The WhiteWings completed the scoring in the top of the eighth as Sam McLain was hit in the back of the helmet by a Ramesis Rosa pitch and pinch-run for by Kevin Griffin. Danilo Reynoso followed with a two-run home run to left field, his fourth of the season, to make it 9-3.

The WhiteWings and Broncos play game two of this four game set tomorrow night at 7:30. Maximino de la Cruz (6-3) is expected to face Luis Arroyo (6-3).
