Colts sweep doubleheader after 4-2 win in night game

July 23, 2007 - United League Baseball (ULB) - San Angelo Colts News Release

LAREDO, Texas - Unfortunately for the San Angelo Colts, they don't have any more games left with the Laredo Broncos this season. After sweeping Sunday's doubleheader-winning the afternoon game 5-1 (seven innings) and the night game 4-2 (nine innings)-the Colts finished the season series against Laredo with 14 wins in 19 meetings.

In addition, San Angelo has won seven of its last eight games, all of them against the Broncos. In the night-cap on Sunday, San Angelo scored all four of its runs in the second inning and never trailed in the game. To begin the frame, Laredo starter Santo Hernandez surrendered three straight singles to load the bases with nobody out. After Jamie Miller struck out, Wyn Diggs hit a chopper to first base and Cameron McGuire tried to force out the runner at home plate. However, McGuire's throw to the plate skipped past the catcher Ryan Kottke, allowing two runs to score on the error. Later in the inning, Ronnie Gaines made it 4-0 with a two-out, two-run single to left-center field.

The Colts managed only two other hits, both of them singles, and didn't put a runner past second base for the rest of the night. San Angelo starter Matt Duff made the runs hold up though, as he improved to 5-0 against Laredo, with four of those wins coming in his last four starts overall.

Duff (7-3) threw six innings, allowed two runs, both earned, on seven hits with six strikeouts and one walk. After recording his third save of the season in game one, Chace Vacek made his second appearance of the day and retired all six batters he faced in the seventh and eighth innings. Colts closer Stephen Artz allowed the tying runs to reach base in the ninth but struck out Randy Rosa and Chris Judkins to preserve the win and pick up his ninth save.

Hernandez (8-2) pitched well as all four runs he allowed were unearned in seven innings of work. The right-hander also struck out 12, walked only one, and retired 12 of 13 at one point in the middle innings. The only run support he received was an RBI double by Edwin Maldonado in the third to make it 4-1, and an RBI single by Javier Lopez in fifth that cut the Colts' lead to 4-2.

In the 19 meetings between the two teams, Laredo has scored only 66 runs while the Colts have pounded out 119 runs. Only one Colt pitcher (Brantley Jordan, 0-1) has a losing record against the Broncos while no Laredo pitcher has a winning record against San Angelo. Brian Daly is 0-4 versus the Colts while all three of Luis Arroyo's losses and both of Hernandez' losses have come against San Angelo.

The Colts continue their longest road trip of the season at 7:05 p.m. on Monday, July 23, when they begin a four-game series in Edinburg against the Coyotes. The Colts return to San Angelo on Monday, July 30 to begin a seven-game homestand.
