Colts Win Fourth Straight, Take Series Opener
EDINBURG, Texas - After waiting over 60 games for their first four-game winning streak of the season, the San Angelo Colts didn't have to wait very long for their second one. The Colts have won eight of their last nine and have won four consecutive games for the second time in a week-and-a-half as they defeated the Edinburg Coyotes 8-5 in the series opener on Monday night.
Ronnie Gaines led off the game with a double off Coyotes starter Eric Montoya and scored later in the inning on a wild pitch to give San Angelo the early 1-0 lead.
Edinburg answered in the bottom of the first off Colts starter Brian Henschel as Nelson Teilon singled home Amado German to even the game at 1-1. The Coyotes took a 2-1 lead in the second with an unearned run, and then scored for the third straight inning in the fourth to take a 4-1 advantage. In that frame, Carlos Gallardo made it 3-1 with an RBI double and Teilon launched a solo home run, his 17th of the year.
The Colts drew to within a run at 4-3 in the fourth thanks to a two-run shot by Andres Rodriguez, his 10th of the season. San Angelo regained the lead for good in the fifth, taking a 5-4 advantage on a two-run double by Madison Edwards. After a single by Eric Harryman, Wyn Diggs drove Edwards home with an RBI sacrifice fly to make it 6-4.
Each team scored a run in its half of the seventh inning as Gaines singled home a run in the top of the frame and German hit a solo homer off Henschel in the bottom of the inning to make it 7-5.
San Angelo went ahead by an 8-5 score in the top of the ninth when Harryman, who tripled off Neomar Flores to begin the inning, scored on a single by Jason Diaz.
Colts closer Stephen Artz entered the game with the bases loaded and two out in the eighth and struck out Adam Bonner to preserve a two-run lead at the time. Artz then struck out the side in the ninth for his 10th save. Henschel (6-6) threw seven innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on nine hits with four strikeouts and one walk. The Colts' right-hander out-pitched Montoya (5-2), who surrendered seven runs, six earned, on 12 hits with five walks and three strikeout in seven innings.
The Colts continue their longest road trip of the season at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday, July 24, when they take on the Edinburg Coyotes in game two of this four-game series. The Colts return to San Angelo on Monday, July 30 to begin a seven-game homestand.
