Brockton Rox News Release
BROCKTON, MA - (July 10, 2009) - The team that was 4-11 in its first 15 home games has rattled off seven straight victories on its home turf as the Brockton Rox defeated the Quebec Capitales 7-3 in front of 4,099 at Campanelli Stadium on Friday night. Overall, the Rox have won six consecutive and are now in second place in the Can-Am League.
Brockton jumped out in front early and did not relinquish the lead. SS Dominic Ramos singled to start the bottom of the first inning, moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by CF Chris Valencia, and scored on a subsequent RBI single by 1B Clyde Williams. Two batters later, RF Jud Thigpen drove in Williams with an RBI single to put Brockton in front 2-0.
After battling through the first two innings, and allowing one run on three hits, Rox starter RHP Wayne Lundgren settled into a rhythm by retiring 13 of 14 including 12 in-a-row. Lundgren did not allow a base runner through the middle innings as the game remained a tight 2-1 contest.
The offense regained its stride against Quebec RHP Karl Gelinas with two runs in the sixth inning. LF Keith Brachold singled to start the inning and after two ground outs stood at third with two outs. C Chris Grossman drove him in with an RBI single. In the ensuing at-bat, Ramos swung and missed at strike three, however the pitch was in the dirt and Quebec catcher Patrick D'Aoust tossed the ball back to the mound allowing Ramos to reach on a passed ball and Grossman to take third base. The Rox then executed a double steal with Grossman stealing home to cap the two-run inning.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Brockton broke the game open when Williams and DH Palmer Karr each reached base to start the inning and Thigpen brought everybody home with his ninth home run of the season, a three-run shot that pushed the lead to 7-2.
LHP Brad Hertzler lowered his ERA to 1.37 with a scoreless eighth inning, and RHP James Baker recorded the final three outs of the game in just his third appearance of the season. Quebec scored one run in the ninth for the final 7-3 tally.
Brockton and Quebec return to Campanelli Stadium on Saturday night. Rookie LHP Rhett Barber will make his professional debut for Quebec against Rox LHP Bryan Morse (1-0, 3.00 ERA). Saturday night's first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 PM.
