New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ - New Hampshire second baseman Boomer Berry's two-run single in the top of the tenth inning broke a 1-1 tie as the American Defenders of New Hampshire defeated the New Jersey Jackals 3-1 on Friday night at Yogi Berra Stadium.

The Jackals, who defeated Sussex 8-7 in ten innings last night, turned to reliever Seth Overbey to try to keep the game tied in the top of the tenth. With the bases loaded and two outs, the left-handed hitting Berry laced an opposite-field single to score catcher Argenis Tavarez, who had singled, and third baseman Jovanny Bromasco, who was hit by a pitch, to give the Defenders a 3-1 lead.

Overbey (2-3) took the loss after New Hampshire closer Juan Padilla stranded two runners on base in the bottom of the tenth inning to notch his league-leading 13th save of the season. Defenders' reliever Adam Piechowski (2-0) tossed two scoreless innings to pick up the victory. Jackals' starter A.J. Wideman pitched another solid game, allowing one unearned run on three hits with seven strikeouts and no walks in eight innings, but didn't factor in the decision. New Hampshire starter Miguel Flores struggled with his command as he walked four batters, but the right-hander surrendered just one run on two hits in 6 2/3 innings with four strikeouts.

Despite the loss in which New Jersey stranded 11 runners on base, the Jackals decrease their magic number to clinch the Can-Am League first-half title to three after the Brockton Rox defeated the second-place Quebec Capitales.

With some help from the twilight sky, the Jackals broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth inning. Right fielder Myron Leslie lifted a leadoff fly ball to center, but New Hampshire center fielder Edward Ovalle lost the baseball as Leslie hustled around the bases for his second triple of the season. The next batter, first baseman Juan Tejeda, bounced a single up the middle with the infield drawn in to plate Leslie and give New Jersey a 1-0 lead.

However, the Defenders countered in the top of the eighth inning to tie the score at 1-1. After left fielder Jerod Edmondson singled with one out, center fielder Edward Ovalle hit a dribbler to the right side which was mishandled by Wideman. The error on the Jackals' pitcher placed runners on first and second for a pinch hitter, Tavarez, who grounded to short. Jackals' shortstop Mike DeJesus threw to third to try to get the force, but Edmondson was ruled safe to load the bases with one out. Bromasco was then hit by a pitch to force in the tying run.

The Jackals and Defenders continue their four-game series on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. when New Jersey sends right-hander Ted Serro (4-2, 4.43 ERA) to the mound against New Hampshire right-hander Isaac Burkett (3-3, 5.91 ERA). Cody Chrusciel and Joey Whelan have the call with the live webcast beginning 15 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com.
