Brockton Rox News Release

One night after piling up 20 hits and 12 runs against New Jersey pitching, it was Brockton's turn to be humiliated as the Jackals (24-21) pounded out 24 hits in a 16-2 rout of the Rox (21-24).

Lead-off hitter Zach Smithlin spearheaded the New Jersey attack, going 4-5 at the plate with five runs scored. Catcher Sandy Madera pitched in with three hits in three at-bats and four RBI, helping New Jersey triumph over the Rox by at least 14 runs for the second time in five games between the two teams.

The Rox broke on top initially, with Craig Lewis' first inning double plating Matt Cucurullo. But the Brockton offense was not heard from again until the top of the ninth, when Mike Scanzano singled in Jake Daubert for a superfluous tally.

In between, the Jackals dominated Rox pitching with three runs in each of the first two innings, two in the fourth, four in the sixth, three in the seventh, and a Chris Rowan home run in the eighth. Rookie reliever Stephen Sloan fared worst among the four Rox hurlers, surrendering ten hits and seven runs in just 1.1 innings.

It grew so bad for the visitors that infielder Hector Henriquez was called upon to throw the last 1.2 innings, allowing only Rowan's roundtripper and fanning three Jackals.

Rox All-Star shortstop Saul Bustos collected two hits in three at-bats before he was removed from the game in the seventh inning, raising his batting average to .364. Bustos, an All-Star in Brockton since the inception of the franchise in 2002, will retire following the Can-Am All-Star Game at Campanelli Stadium on Tuesday, July 19. Great seats are still available at 508-559-7070.

Rox starter Jon Koch (3-2) shoulders the loss, though half of the eight runs he allowed in 3.2 IP were unearned. New Jersey starter Josh Brey (5-2) went seven strong innings to earn the win.

Brockton and New Jersey culminate the first half with a special noon start at Yogi Berra Stadium on Wednesday. RHP Manny Tejada heads to the mound for the Rox against Jackals All-Star RHP Aaron Myers.
