Stawarz shuts down Grays
July 12, 2005 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Haven County Cutters News Release
New Haven County Cutters starting pitcher Jarrett Stawarz has not had any trouble moving from the bullpen to the starting rotation, evinced by his start on Tuesday night, a complete game 5-0 shut out of the Can-Am League Grays.
From the start of the game, it was evident that this was to be the Burlington, CT native?s night on the mound. He retired the first thirteen batters of the game. When Francisco Lebron broke up his bid for perfection in the fifth inning, Stawarz induced a double play ball on the very next batter.
Even a brief rain delay could not slow down the hard-throwing righty. He finished the night with six strikeouts to only one walk and surrendered just five hits. It was the first shutout thrown by a Cutters pitcher all year.
The offense made sure that Stawarz would have a multiple run cushion to work with right from the start. Mike O?Keefe and Derrick Gibson each scored on back-to-back singles by Bill Peavey and Jeff Brooks in the top of the first. Andy Larned tallied two more on the scoreboard with an RBI single in the third. New Haven County had scored all five of their runs before the Grays had registered their first hit.
Over his past two starts Stawarz has been nothing short of spectacular. He has pitched 15 and one third innings giving up just one unearned run on six hits and striking out 13.
The Cutters wrap up the first half of the season on Wednesday night in the rubber match of their series with the Grays. Mark Comolli (1-0) makes his first start for the Cutters against Grays starter Lincoln Mincks (4-2).
