New Jersey Jackals News Release

The New Jersey Jackals battered the Brockton Rox 16-2 at Yogi Berra Stadium in Little Falls, N.J. Jackals' manager Joe Calfapietra recorded his 130th franchise victory and with the win, Calfapietra became the winningest manager in team history. Calfapietra reached the milestone in 24 fewer games than the previous record holder. Calfapietra will also manage the 2005 Can-Am All-Star game on July 19 in Brockton, Mass.

Jackals starting pitcher Josh Brey struggled early, allowing one first-inning run but settled down as the game progressed and did not allow another run. Brey recorded six strikeouts and improved to 5-2 on the season.

The Jackals' offense pounded out a season-high 24 hits against Brockton as every hitter in the lineup had at least one hit. Zach Smithlin went 4-for-5 on the day and Sandy Madera finished 3-for-3 with four RBIs. John Lindsey also had three hits and Ricardo Cordova finished with three hits and two RBIs.

The Jackals fell behind 1-0 after Brey allowed a run in the top of the first inning but in the bottom half of the inning, the Jackals scored three runs to take a 3-1 lead. The team continued to tack on runs for the rest of the game, adding three the sixth inning, two in the fourth, four in the six, three in the seventh, and one in the eighth.

The Jackals and the Rox will play the rubber game of the three game series Wednesday afternoon. James Mondesir will take the mound for New Jersey and Manny Tejada is the expected starter for the Rox. The game will begin at 12:05.
