Brockton Rox News Release
One night after losing a heartbreaker in the ninth, the Brockton Rox (8-2) put away Elmira (5-5) early, routing the Pioneers, 12-1, to take two of three games from their hosts.
Matt Cucurullo, Guye Senjem, and Craig Lewis each drove in three runs for the Rox, with Senjem walloping a solo home run in the third and Lewis cracking a three-run homer in a six-run fourth that broke the game open. With that swing, the Australian first baseman set a Rox team record, reaching base for the 22nd consecutive game.
Brockton leapt on Pioneers starter Jose Guzman early with four of the game's first five batsman hitting safely, including run-scoring singles by Senjem and Elmira resident Brian Jones. Kris Zacuto followed with a sacrifice fly to give Rox starter Kevin Beavers a 3-0 lead before the southpaw could throw his first pitch.
After the teams traded runs in the third on Senjem's solo shot and an RBI single by Elmira hitting coach/leftfielder Trey Beamon, Brockton put the game out of reach in the top of the fourth.
Jake Daubert and Eddie Gerald initiated the rally with inning-opening singles. Andrew Salvo attempted to advance his teammates up a base with a sacrifice bunt, but the ball was gobbled up off his bat by an agile Guzman, who threw to third in an attempt to nab Daubert. The Rox third baseman should have been the first out of the inning, but his Elmira counterpart Das Jesson took his foot off the bag in stretching for Guzman's throw.
With this reprieve, Brockton now had the bases loaded and still none out. Cucurullo and Eugene Julien took advantage with RBI singles, Guye Senjem followed with a run-scoring groundout, and Lewis crushed his seventh roundtripper of the season for a 10-1 lead that ended Guzman's night.
Brockton added solo runs in the fifth and seventh inning, thanks to a Cucurullo sacrifice fly and RBI single respectively, but the game by that point had long been decided.
Kevin Beavers (3-3) earned the victory, hurling seven strong innings and allowing just the one run on three hits and a walk while fanning six. The line for Guzman (2-5) was a tad uglier: 3.1 innings, 11 hits, 10 runs.
Brockton now travels to Worcester, MA, to start a four-game series with the Tornadoes. The first game is scheduled for Thursday night at 7:05 and pits Rox righthander Grant Dorn (2-0, 2.57) against Worcester's Reid Willett (6-3, 3.80).
