Spirit's Community Award goes to Saugus man on Sunday

Dick Barry of Saugus will receive the coveted Community Spirit Award on Sunday at Fraser Field prior to the North Shore Spirit - Elmira game. The award ceremonies begin at 1:30. Doors open at 1; game time is 2:05.

Barry, known to many as "Mr. Saugus" through the years, will be the fourth Community Spirit recipient. The award is sponsored by Kevin Harrington of the Harrington Trophy Shop on Chestnut Street, and Nick Lopardo of the North Shore Spirit.

Previous winners have been Boston Red Sox legend Johnny Pesky of Swampscott, Little League commissioner Alice O'Neil of Lynn, and longtime baseball coach Jack Dean of Beverly.

Barry was instrumental in raising funds to help build the Saugus Senior Center in his role on the Board of Selectmen. He helped raise a $50,000 grant. He has served as a church usher and elector and was vice president of the Council on Aging.

He was a director in the Saugus Little League for many years and was on board when the Saugus Americans went to Little League's World Series in 2003. Barry was in the Williamsport stands rooting them on, and later honored by the Saugus league which selected him Grand Marshall in the team's homecoming parade.

He was a baseball parent, a coach, and treasurer in Saugus baseball for years, as well as town CYO basketball director for 20 years.

Multi-talented, he has served as Saugus football voice during cable TV broadcasts, and writes a humor column in a Saugus weekly.
