New Haven County Cutters News Release
For 12-innings the New Haven County Cutters and the Quebec Les Capitales battled back and forth, victory tantalizingly close for both teams. The Cutters would eventually triumph, 5-4, when Chas Terni scored from second base on a sharply hit Bill Peavey single into right field.
The Cutters grabbed a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the eighth after Les Capitales had tied the game at three in the top of the frame. It was Peavey again at the forefront of the Cutters? offensive attack. After reaching on a two-out one bagger, he raced around the bases on a Jeff Brooks double and scored what looked like it might be the winning run.
A last gasp rally from Quebec in their final at bat pushed the game into extra frames. With the runners on the corners and two down, the Cutters gambled when they attempted to throw out Geoffrey Tomlinson as he tried to swipe second base. The throw from Andy Larned sailed over the head of Chas Terni and Danny Scalabrini scored easily from third to tie the game.
Three perfect innings from Cutters reliever Nick Rowland made sure that the home side needed only one run for the win. The opportunity to grab the victory came with one out in the 12th. Terni singled and then moved to second on a wild pitch from David Lipson, signed just that afteroon by Quebec. Les Capitales were hesitant to pitch to Derrick Gibson all night and continued that trend when they intentionally walked him to set up a potential double play. The chance to turn two never arrived as Peavey laced the game-winning hit.
New Haven County?s starter Tim Keinath allowed just one earned run over his six innings of work, walking five and striking out four. He got the better of Quebec?s starter Julien Tucker who tossed seven strong but surrendered three earned runs.
The Cutters and Les Capitales go at it again on Friday night at 7:05. It?s Latino Night at Yale Field. Courtney Hall (2-2) starts for the Cutters and will face off against Danny Prata (2-0).
