JACKSONVILLE, Fla. â Tarrik Brock's game-tying home run in the bottom of the ninth went for naught in the Suns' 3-2 loss to the Carolina Mudcats in 11 innings Friday in front of 5,928 fans at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
Brock homered off Mudcats reliever Sean Fesh, who previously had not allowed a run in 24-2/3 innings with Carolina this season.
But Chip Ambres' sacrifice fly in the 11th scored Matt Padgett and made a loser out of Agustin Montero (1-1) and the Suns (22-24). Jacksonville had won its prior three games.
The loss puts the Suns 7½ games behind first-place Carolina, which improved to 29-16 with the victory.
Suns starter Joel Hanrahan pitched seven innings, allowing two runs and five hits. But Todd Moser, who allowed one unearned run and four hits over 7-1/3 innings, outmatched him. Neither pitcher factored in the decision.
In the bottom of the 11th, the Suns hit two singles off Mike Flannery and Franklyn Gracesqui, respectively, to create a first-and-third situation with two outs. Gracesqui struck out Derek Michaelis to record his second save.
The Suns have lost 11 games by one run this season.
Right-hander Tommy Farmer (2-3, 4.28 ERA) is scheduled to face Mudcats righty Randy Messenger (2-3, 6.57) at 7:05 p.m. Saturday at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
