May 23, 2003 - Southern League (SL1)
Mobile BayBears News Release
Mobile, Ala. â Coming off of his strongest outing of the season, BayBears starter Steve Watkins may have topped himself Friday night. Watkins (3-3) earned his second straight win as he threw seven shutout innings, surrendering just four hits while striking out six batters as he led Mobile to a 2-0 win over the Birmingham Barons, in front of a great crowd of 4,732.
The BayBears scored a single run in the first inning as Jon Knott drove in Todd Donovan with a one-out single. Knott would later score himself in the sixth. After leading off the frame with his second hit of the game, Knott was brought home by Khalil Greene's single. The hit for Greene was also his second of the night.
Watkins was the story at Hank Aaron Stadium. In his last outing the right-hander worked eight innings and allowed just one run while striking out nine Orlando Rays hitters.
The BayBears and Barons will play game two of their series Saturday night at 7:05. RHP Chris Oxspring (0-2) comes out of the bullpen and will make his first start of the season against Birmingham LHP Neal Cotts (6-1).
