Brigade release QB John Fitzgerald

April 1, 2008 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Kansas City Brigade News Release

John Fitzgerald and the Kansas City Brigade have parted ways. Fitzgerald, who is in his sixth year in the AFL, was signed in the off-season and was anointed the starting quarterback after training camp. Fitzgerald would only start two games before losing his job to Matt Kohn. Fitzgerald started in Week 5 against San Jose due to Kohn nursing a sore hand. Fitzgerald was 0-3 as a starter. On the season Fitzgerald completed 61% of his passes while throwing for 724 yards and 12 touchdowns. Fitzgerald added seven rushing touchdowns, which is currently third in the AFL. Turnovers were the main problem for Fitzgerald. He threw five interceptions and lost six fumbles. The Brigade currently rank last in turnover differential with -10. "The offense wasn't functioning under John like we had hoped. We feel right now that the two younger QB's give us the best chance to play better," Brigade Head Coach Kevin Porter said. Fitzgerald will return to Oklahoma to continue his studies.

Bryant to Start at Quarterback

Matt Kohn's hand is getting better each day; however, he is not ready to start. AFL rookie D. Bryant, who joined the Brigade in the preseason, will be getting the start this Friday against the Georgia Force. Friday's game will be Bryant's first in the AFL, but he has three years experience in arenafootball2. In 2007, playing under current Brigade offensive coordinator Rickie Foggie, Bryant set an af2 record with 4,680 passing yards. Bryant also became only the third quarterback in af2 history to throw for over 100 touchdowns in one season. Bryant finished with a league high 102 passing touchdowns for the South Georgia Wildcats.

The Brigade may look to add a quarterback to their practice squad.
