
Brett Ponich Assigned to Aces from Peoria

The Alaska Aces have received second-year defenseman Brett Ponich on assignment from the Peoria Rivermen of the American Hockey League, Alaska Head Coach Rob Murray announced on Tuesday. Ponich will join the Aces on the road in Colorado for three games this week, beginning on Wednesday. The Aces begin a season-ending, five-game road trip this week, and will return back home for Games 1 & 2 of the opening round of the 2013 Kelly Cup Playoffs on Friday, April 5 and Saturday, April 6. Tickets will go on sale to the general public beginning next week. They will be available at the Aces office, Sullivan Arena Box Office, Fred Meyer locations or online at www.ticketmaster.com. Ponich, 22, brings a wealth of size to the Aces blue line. The Beaumont, Alberta native stands 6'7" and weighs 225 lbs. He was selected in the second round (48th overall) of the 2009 NHL Draft by the St. Louis Blues., five picks after Alaska rookie defenseman William Wrenn was selected by San Jose in the same draft. Ponich has played in 100 professional games, with 87 of them coming in the AHL. He had five assists and 47 penalty minutes in 61 games with the Rivermen last season as a rookie. This year he's played in 26 games for the Rivermen, tallying 38 points. He also spent 13 games this season in the ECHL with the Evansville Icemen. He had one goal, two assists, and 26 penalty minutes. Prior to his pro career, Ponich spent four seasons of junior hockey with the Portland Winterhawks. In 249 career games with Portland, Ponich had 47 points (2g, 45a) and 327 penalty minutes. He captained Portland for his final three seasons, eventually being succeeded by Wrenn after Ponich turned pro.
In a related roster move the Aces released defenseman Brad Gorham, an Anchorage resident who filled in for a depleted Alaska team last week.
