Road Warriors Playoff Update
March 19, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Greenville Swamp Rabbits News Release
The Road Warriors are flying high after a successful tour of the North Division last week. Greenville collected seven out of a possible eight points with wins over Toledo, Evansville and Kalamazoo a shootout loss to Fort Wayne. The late season surge now has the Road Warriors in 5th place in the Eastern Conference with five games left to play. If the playoffs were to start today, Greenville would play the Florida Everblades.
The Road Warriors now head south to face off against division rival the Orlando Solar Bears. The Road Warriors will visit the Solar Bears for two games on Wednesday and Thursday. Two wins in Orlando combined with a loss from the Kalamazoo Wings will officially clinch a playoff spot for the Road Warriors.
The race for the South Division Title is starting to heat up. Gwinnett, Greenville, Florida and South Carolina all are in the hunt for the division crown. The Gwinnett Gladiators currently lead the pack with 83 points in 68 games played. The Florida Everblades trail close behind with 79 points in 66 games. The Road Warriors and Stingrays, each with 78 points, are also very much in the hunt. The Road Warriors do have a game in hand on the Stingrays. With two games home against South Carolina and the season finale in Gwinnett, the last weekend of the season is shaping up to be the most important weekend of the season for the Road Warriors.
About the Kelly Cup Playoffs
In the ECHL only the top eight teams advance to the playoffs. The first, second and third playoff spots are given to the winners of each division. They would play the eighth, seven and sixth seed respectively. The fourth and fifth seeds would play against each other as well. Home ice advantage will be given to the first four seed. Home ice advantage means that team will play four games at their arena and three games in the opposing team's arena. Teams will not reseed after the first round of play much like the bracket style of NCAA basketball.
