Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Pawtucket, RI) - Bryce Brentz's three-run homer propelled the Pawtucket Red Sox to a 4-1 win over the Columbus Clippers on Thursday night at McCoy Stadium. Brentz gave PawSox starter Brian Johnson all the run support he would need; Johnson earned his fourth win with a terrific six and two thirds innings in which he struck out eight and walked one.
Johnson's only mistake of the evening gave Columbus (19-15) a brief lead; Michael Martinez broke out of an 0-for-15 slump with a solo home run to left that pushed the Clippers ahead, 1-0.
When the slugging right fielder took Jhoulys Chacin deep in the bottom of the third inning, Pawtucket (21-14) had already tied the game at 1. Chacin - making his first minor league start for the Cleveland Indians - had walked Deven Marrero and allowed a double to Jemile Weeks before Rusney Castillo knotted the game with a sacrifice fly to left. Allen Craig then walked to put two aboard for Brentz, who ripped his first round-tripper since April 17th.
Once he had a lead, Johnson put Columbus away. The lefthander retired 12 of the last 14 Clippers he faced, sprinkling a pair of hits over his last four innings on the mound.
Miguel Celestino got the last out of the seventh and pitched a perfect eight before Heath Hembree came on and earned his fourth save.
The PawSox play game two of the four-game series with on Friday night with first pitch at 7:05pm. Left-hander Brian Johnson (2-2, 4.06) is expected to start for the PawSox while the Clippers counter with lefty Nick Maronde (0-4, 5.64).
