Charlotte Knights News Release
(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - Matthew Spann was promoted to the Syracuse Chiefs from High-A Potomac on Friday and made his Major League debut at BB&T Ballpark. He was sharp on the evening. Spann (1-0, 0.00) allowed just one unearned run over six innings, Ian Stewart hit a three-run home run, and the Syracuse Chiefs beat the Charlotte Knights by a score of 9-3 on Friday in the opening game of a three-game series from BB&T Ballpark in front of a sell-out crowd of 10,534 fans - the highest regular season crowd of the 2015 season. The sell-out crowd was the 10th of the season at BB&T Ballpark.
Originally drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 25th round of the 2010 draft out of Central High School in Columbia, TN, Spann was 0-4 with a 4.65 ERA in five starts for the Potomac Nationals this season at the time of his promotion. The Tennessee native lost his first four starts of the year with Potomac, but was solid on Friday allowing a total of just two hits while fanning four Knights batters.
Charlotte starter Erik Johnson (3-3, 4.55) allowed three runs on three hits over six innings and was saddled with the loss. Johnson walked four batters, struck-out five, and threw 101 pitches on the evening.
Dan Black and Matt Davidson each hit doubles in the game, but the Knights combined to connect on just five hits on the evening. Charlotte reliever Zach Phillips tossed two scoreless innings out of the bullpen and struck-out four batters on the night. The two teams will continue their series from BB&T Ballpark on Saturday with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch. RHP Kyle Drabek (0-1, 1.89) will get the ball for the Knights and face Syracuse RHP Scott McGregor (3-2, 3.62). Gates open at 6:00 p.m. and it's the 10th Annual Pink Knights game, presented by Charlotte Radiology and Belk.
