Brent Howarth Named Oakley Player Of The Week

Corpus Christi Rayz forward, Brent Howarth has been named the Central Hockey League's Oakley Player of the Week, the CHL announced on Monday. Howarth had three goals and two assists in three games this week, helping to lead Corpus Christi to a 2-0-1 record and a season-high, four-game point streak. Howarth currently leads the Rayz in goals (9) and points (18). Howarth is second among CHL rookies in points, and tied for third in goals. Howarth and the Rayz return to the ice on Wednesday morning for the 4th Annual Cool School Day Game, presented by the American Bank Center, SMG and the City of Corpus Christi. The Rayz host the Arizona Sundogs at 11:05am and will welcome in more than 3,000 local area students. Tickets for the game are on sale now. Call 361.814.PUCK for more information.

Howarth, 21, has shot out of the gates in his first pro season. He is converting at better than a point per game with nine goals, nine assists and 18 points in 17 games. Howarth had a goal in each of the three Rayz games over the weekend, including some timely tallies. On Friday night in Austin, Howarth scored in the final minute of regulation to force overtime and help give the Rayz their first road win of the season. On Saturday, his goal with less than five minutes in Laredo handed Corpus Christi their first lead of a game they eventually won 3-2. On Sunday, Howarth scored the only goal for Corpus Christi in a 2-1 shootout loss. Howarth has points in six straight, including multiple point games in four of his last five. Combining to form the Rayz number one line, Howarth along with Justin Quenneville and Joe Blaznek accounted for six of the eight Rayz goals this weekend and 13 points in the three games.

Prior to turning pro, the St. Andrews, Manitoba native put up a remarkable 49 goals and 82 assists for 131 points in just 59 games last season for the Selkirk Steelers of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. His 131 points were second overall in the league, trailing only his twin brother Kyle who had 141.
