Brennan Has 3 Hits, But Ducks Fall to Squirrels, 7-3

RubberDucks center fielder Will Brennan had a season-high three hits and drove in two runs to take over the Eastern League batting average (.352) and RBI (19) leads, but the Richmond Flying Squirrels scored six runs in the seventh inning to rally for a 7-3 win, their second straight over Akron and sixth straight overall at The Diamond Wednesday night.

Turning Point

With Akron leading, 2-1, in the bottom of the seventh inning, right-hander Manuel Alvarez walked three of the first four batters to load the bases. Right-hander Jerson Ramírez entered and threw a wild pitch that scored the tying run, before center fielder Mike Gigliotti grounded a two-run single over first base to give Richmond a 4-2 lead. Gigliotti stole second and third bases before scoring on a throwing error by catcher Eric Rodríguez. Ramírez later allowed a two-run home run to first baseman Frankie Tostado, capping a six-run frame and putting Richmond ahead, 7-2.

Mound Presence

Right-hander Xzavion Curry retired the first 10 batters of the game before allowing a walk and single in the fourth. He allowed the game-tying home run to shortstop Tyler Fitzgerald in the fifth inning but completed five innings, allowing two hits and one walk with eight strikeouts, matching his season high. Right-hander Luis Oviedo made his RubberDucks debut with a scoreless sixth inning and two strikeouts around a hit and an error. Alvarez (1/3 inning) and Ramírez (2/3 inning) each allowed three runs in the seventh. Right-hander Nick Gallagher pitched a scoreless eighth inning.

Duck Tales

Akron scored first for a second straight game in Richmond. Right fielder George Valera drew a fourth-inning, one-out walk and scored on center fielder Will Brennan's RBI double to right-center field. In a 1-1 tie in the sixth, Valera lined a double to right-center field, and Brennan hit an RBI single to center field for a 2-1 Akron lead. In the ninth, Brennan, left fielder Julian Escobedo and first baseman Micah Pries each singled, scoring one run before the final out.

Notebook

Brennan also leads Akron with seven doubles (tied for fifth in the league), nine multi-hit games and six multi-RBI games this season. He and José Tena are tied for fourth in the league with 25 hits...Tena's eighth-inning infield single made him 10-for-25 in a six-game hitting streak...Game Time: 2:36...Attendance: 8,798.
