Norfolk, Va. - The Richmond Braves defeated the Norfolk Tides 6-2 on Friday night at Harbor Park. The Braves improved to 75-63 while the Tides dropped to 68-72 on the season. The Braves remain two games behind Durham, who was also victorious on Friday, in the International League's South Division.
Richmond scored four runs in the fourth inning and two in the eighth in route to the 6-2 victory. Brandon Jones and Barbaro Canizares were each 2-for-4 to lead the Braves' offense. Canizares also drove in three runs in the win.
Jon Knott, who had three hits for Norfolk, paced the Tides' offense. Val Majewski added a pair of hits for the Tides.
Jeff Bennett allowed just one run in seven strong innings for Richmond. He struck out six Tides to earn his third win of the season, his first win as a starter. Braves' reliever Phil Stockman, who pitched the eighth and ninth innings, allowed one more Norfolk run in the bottom of the ninth but secured the Richmond victory.
Andy Mitchell allowed just one run in six innings but was charged with the loss. He is now 8-8 on the season with a 3.96 ERA. Richard Salazar and Steve Green also saw action out the Tides' bullpen.
The Braves play their final regular-season road game tomorrow at Norfolk. Richmond is scheduled to pitch RHP Trey Hodges (5-6, 4.61 ERA). Hodges will battle RHP Hayden Penn (2-0, 2.81 ERA) in the 7:15 p.m. start.
