BULLS CLINCH PLAYOFF SPOT WITH WIN OVER KNIGHTS
Durham, NC - Led by Chris Richard's 2-for-4, three RBI performance, the Bulls scored seven runs in the first three innings to defeat the Charlotte Knights, 7-3 in front of a sold out crowd of 10,936 on Friday night at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The win guarantees the Bulls a spot in the 2007 Governors'' Cup playoffs, as Buffalo defeated Rochester 10-6. Richmond also won, so the Bulls remain two games ahead in the race for the South division title with a Magic Number of 2.
Charlotte scored a run in the top of the first inning when Casey Rogowski grounded into a double play with the bases loaded, but the Bulls took over from there. Richard hit an RBI-double to clear the bases, and then was plated by Wes Bankston on a sacrifice to give the Bulls a 4-0 lead in the bottom half of the inning. Jason Pridie hit an RBI-single to drive in Elliot Johnson in the second inning, before Evan Longoria capped the scoring in the third with a two-run home run. Kenny Perez hit a two RBI-single in the ninth to close the gap to 7-3 for the Knights.
LHP J.P. Howell (7-8) pitched well, allowing just one run on five hits and a walk while striking out 10 and extending his Triple-A Bulls record total to 145 on the year. RHP Lance Broadway (8-9) lasted just three innings for the Knights, allowing seven runs on six hits and three walks while striking out three. LHP Carlos Vasquez, RHP Dewon Day, and RHP Jason Childers combined to hold the Bulls scoreless for the rest of the game.
The Bulls and Knights will meet again on Saturday night at 7 PM at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park for the final regular season game of the year. For tickets, go to www.durhambulls.com or call the box office at (919) 956-BULL.
