Pearl, MS --- A 12-batter, six-run third inning was all it took for the Mississippi Braves to seize command and defeat the Carolina Mudcats 7-3 at Trustmark Park before 1,588 fans on Monday night.

The Braves (21-23) scored six times with two outs, and had eight batters reach in succession after Pedro Villarreal (L, 4-1) retired Antoan Richardson on a grounder for the second out of the inning. Five hits, two walks and one hit batter later, the Braves had established a 6-0 lead. Villarreal was relieved by Kyle McCulloch with the bases loaded as the rally continued with a two-run single by Jordan Kreke, who won Sunday's game with a single in the ninth.

Carolina (19-24), which fell seven games behind first place Chattanooga with 26 remaining, closed within 6-3 thanks to three combined unearned runs in the fourth and fifth innings against winning pitcher Aaron Shafer (W, 1-1). James Skelton and Didi Gregorius singled home runs in the fourth with two down, and a dropped fly ball scored Henry Rodriguez in the fifth.

Mississippi extended the lead to 7-3 in the fifth when Mycal Jones scored from third on the three of four Carolina errors in the game.

Carolina, sitting 3-5 on its road trip, wraps up a 10-day stay away from home on Tuesday night in the series finale against the Braves. Curtis Partch (0-0, 9.64) starts against Jose Lugo (0-3, 4.59) at 8:05 PM ET.
