Mississippi Braves News Release
PEARL, MS-Aaron Shafer led the M-Braves to a 7-3 victory over the Carolina Mudcats, both offensively and defensively, in game four of this five-game series at Trustmark Park.
While picking up two hits at the plate, Shafer (1-1) also started and went five frames for the Braves. He gave up three unearned runs on five hits, a walk, and three strikeouts.
In a six-run third inning that saw the M-Braves send 12 batters to the plate, Shafer became the first pitcher in M-Braves history to not only record two at-bats in one inning, but also record hits in both at-bats.
With the win, the M-Braves also claimed the series victory over the Mudcats, thus improving to 46-68 on the season and 21-23 in the second half. Carolina fell to 42-71 overall and 19-24 in the second half.
While Mississippi plated seven runs on just seven hits with the aid of four Mudcat errors, Carolina scored three unearned runs on six hits and two M-Braves' errors.
Shafer doubled and scored on a Willie Cabrera singled to center field, giving the M-Braves a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Donell Linares then singled to put runners at the corners, and Ed Lucas singled to drive in Cabrera. A bases-loaded walk and hit batsman plated two more, extending the Braves' lead to 4-0. Jordan Kreke followed with a two-run single to left-center to make it 6-0.
Bill Rhinehart singled and Cody Puckett reached on an error by third baseman Donell Linares. James Skelton followed with an RBI single to right field, and Didi Gregorius drove in Puckett on an infield single to cut the M-Braves lead to 6-2.
Carolina made it a 6-3 game in the fifth. Henry Rodriguez singled, took second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a ground out. He then came in to score when Neftali Soto reached on an error by right fielder Cory Harrilchak.
The M-Braves got that run back in the bottom of the fifth. Mycal Jones reached on an error. He then stole second and third base before scoring when Kreke reached on an error to make it 7-3.
In Tuesday night's series finale, M-Braves' lefty Jose Lugo (0-1, 4.22) counters Mudcats' right-hander Curtis Partch (0-0, 9.64). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM. Gates open at 6:00 PM.
