
Timely Hitting Leads to Generals Win Over Barons

BIRMINGHAM, ALA. (AUGUST 8, 2011) - Despite being out-hit 13-8, the Generals defeated the Birmingham Barons Monday night at Regions Park, 6-4. The Barons stranded 10 runners on base and were 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position. The Jackson win evened the series at 2-2, forcing the fourth straight rubber game of a series for Jackson.
Rich Poythress collected two hits for the third straight day, finishing 2-for-4, with a double and RBI. Luis Jimenez was 2-for-3, scoring a run and driving in a run. Four Barons had two hits and Jose Martinez led the way for Birmingham's 13-hit attack by going 3-for-5 with a run.
Stephen Hensley (3-6) won his second straight start and pitched 5 2/3 innings Monday night, allowing three runs and eight hits. Hensley struck out a season high six batters and walked two. Stephen Pryor was brilliant again at the back end, pitching two scoreless frames to earn his second Double-A save, striking out three. Birmingham starter, Terry Doyle (3-5) took the loss and surrendered five runs on seven hits, in five innings.
The Generals jumped on the board first in the second with three runs. Rich Poythress plated Vinnie Catricala with a double and Francisco Martinez brought in Luis Jimenez and Rich Poythress. Jackson led 3-0.
The Generals scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, getting an RBI double by Scott Savastano in the fourth and a RBI single by Luis Jimenez in the fifth.
With Jackson leading 5-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Jon Gilmore smacked a 2-run home run to left, narrowing the Jackson lead to 5-3.
The Generals and Barons exchanged sacrifice flies in the eighth inning and Jackson went on to win 6-4.
The Generals finish up their five-game series on Tuesday night at Regions Park in Birmingham, AL against the Birmingham Barons. Game time is set for 7:05 pm. RHP Andrew Carraway (8-3, 3.41) makes the start for the Generals against LHP Justin Edwards (3-6, 4.73) for Birmingham.
