Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - Three Rome pitchers scattered seven hits and allowed no runs, as the Braves shutout the Charleston RiverDogs, 1-0, in South Atlantic League action Wednesday night in front of 3,978 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
With the victory, the Braves snap the RiverDogs' four-game winning streak and improve to 23-23 in the season's second half and 45-70 overall while Charleston falls to 22-22 since the All-Star break and 67-47 on the season.
The RiverDogs were shutout for the first time since July 28 when Hickory whitewashed Charleston, 6-0.
Rome scored the game's lone run in the sixth inning when Cody Johnson singled, advanced to third on Matt Kennelly's single and scored on a fielding error by Charleston starter Jairo Heredia (5-6), who failed to get a grip on the ball in his attempt to throw to first base on a dribbler hit by Adam Coe.
Braves starter Jeff Locke (5-10) threw 6.0 solid innings and allowed five hits while striking out five and walking a pair. Chad Rodgers pitched the seventh and eighth frames and allowed one hit while recording four punchouts, and closer Craig Kimbrel earned his third save of the season, as he pitched the ninth while allowing one hit and marked two strikeouts.
The RiverDogs threatened to score in the bottom of the ninth when Wady Rufino, who returned to the lineup for the first time since May 7, reached first base on a throwing error by Rome's shortstop Chad Lundahl. Matt Morris was inserted to run for Rufino and promptly stole second base.
After Brandon Laird struck out looking, Carmen Angelini recorded an infield single, placing runners on first and second with one out. Abraham Almonte struck out swinging and Austin Krum, who stepped in the batters box with a 3-for-3 night, ended the threat and the game with a flyout to left fielder David Berres.
Heredia went 6.1 innings for Charleston and permitted an unearned run while scattering five hits and striking out six. Craig Heyer went 1.2 uneventful innings, while Jonathan Ortiz pitched the ninth and fanned one of the three batters he faced.
Of Rome's five hits on the night, no one individual recorded more than one, while Krum's three knocks led Charleston's seven-hit performance.
Game 2 of this four-game block is set for Thursday at 7:05 p.m. with Charleston sending righty Adam Olbrychowski (5-6, 5.15 ERA) to the hill while Rome counters with lefty Edgar Osuna (6-4, 3.40 ERA).
