Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

Eastlake, OH- Sometimes even good pitches can be disastrous. That was certainly the case in the bottom of the eighth inning tonight when Shorebird reliever Brian Parker was locked in a battle with Captains DH Jeff Hehr. With the score tied 2-2, the bases loaded with two outs, and Hehr fouling off pitch after pitch with a 3-2 count, the pressure mounted. And on the 12th toss of the at bat, Hehr blooped a lazy fly down the left field line that resulted in a bases-clearing go-ahead double. Lake County's Ron Rivas followed up Hehr's two-bagger with a triple that put the Captains up 6-2, and that would end up being the final score.

The Shorebirds got three more hits from Ryan Adams, who's now 12-21 in the five games on this current road trip, and another home run from Joe Nowicki, his 18th of the season that his the foul pole in the first inning, but the Delmarva batters also struck out 14 times against Captains pitching. Matt Angle, Tyler Henson, and Kieron Pope all fanned three times each as the Shorebirds could never put a big inning together.

Delmarva also wasted a solid effort from starter Chris Salberg, who allowed just two runs on five hits in five and two-thirds innings. Salberg did not allow a hit until the fourth and had a shutout into the sixth before the Captains scraped a pair off the Shorebird southpaw. In six starts this season, Salberg remains winless despite some another respectable effort. The Shorebirds fall 5.5 games behind the idle West Virginia Power heading into game two of the series with the Captains. Zach Britton, fresh off six strong innings this past Saturday night against West Virginia, will make the start for Delmarva.
