Hagerstown Suns News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD - Lakewood BlueClaws (29-17) starter Mike Stutes (3-0) struck out twelve Suns batters and helped to shut out the Hagerstown Suns (20-26) 4-0 on Wednesday night.
Stutes made his third start for the BlueClaws and shut down the Suns as he went seven innings, allowed three hits and walked two to complement his twelve strikeouts.
Stephen King hit a double off Stutes in the bottom of the second and two batters later Robbie Jacobsen walked but Stutes fanned Bryan Miller to end the inning.
Suns starter Colton Willems was dominate through his first four innings as he retired eleven of the thirteen batters he faced while only allowing a single and walk.
Tim Kennelly tried to stretch his single off of Willems in the second to extra bases but Suns Outfielder Mark Gildea picked off Kennelly at second base.
Trouble found Willems in the fifth as Travis Mattair singled and scored on a deep RBI double by T.J. Warren. Luis Arzeno then drove in Warren with a single to give the BlueClaws a 2-0 lead.
One batter later, Michael Burgess added his 26th outfield assist by doubling off Arzeno at first base after Derrick Mitchell flew out to right field to end the inning.
In the bottom of the fourth Tim Pahuta singled and after a King strikeout, Burgess slapped a base hit to put runners on first and second. Stutes then struck out the next two batters to end the frame. He finished his start by retiring eleven of the last thirteen batters he faced.
Suns reliever Ryan Buchter tossed two innings for the Suns in relief but in his second inning of work let two runs score. Mike Durant scored after a Travis Mattair single and Arzeno's RBI single increased the Lakewood lead to 4-0.
Jamie Lehman threw two scoreless innings for the Suns to give his offense a chance for a comeback but Lakewood reliever Chris Kissock held the Suns to one single to Burgess in his two innings work.
Kissock struck out three of the seven batters he faced and the BlueClaws picked up the shutout victory.
The Suns will take on the BlueClaws for game two of the four game series on August 7th at 7:05 p.m.
