PEARL, Miss. - Mississippi starting pitcher Andrew Thurman's one-run outing and the Braves' four-run first inning was too much for Birmingham to overcome Thursday night at Trustmark Park as the Barons fell 4-3 in the third game of the series.

Thurman (5-6, 3.55 ERA) was a last-minute addition to the Mississippi rotation and was masterful in just his second outing with the Braves. The right-hander tossed six innings, allowing three hits and one run to the Birmingham offense. On the other hand, Barons' starter Mark Blackmar was slapped with the loss.

Blackmar (5-6, 3.55 ERA) was tagged for four quick runs in the first inning - the only four runs he gave up the entire night. The runs came despite just one hit in the frame. A bases-loaded walk and fielding error resulted in the first two runs scored, then sacrifice flies from Kevin Ahrens and Sean Godfrey made it a 4-0 game.

Barons' first baseman Danny Hayes put Birmingham on the board in the fourth inning. The left-handed slugger flied out to right, scoring Christian Marrero from third to bring the Braves lead within three. It was the lone run allowed by Thurman before exiting after the sixth.

A dramatic ninth inning had fans in Mississippi on the edge of their seats as Birmingham loaded the bases with one out. Braves' relievers Kyle Kinman, Mitch Lambson and Tyler Jones each saw action in the final frame as the Barons threatened late. The first three of four Birmingham batters in the inning walked, and lined a double to left to plate two. Unfortunately for the Barons, Jones was able to stop the bleeding and record his 14th save of the season.

The Birmingham offense combined for five hits. Tim Anderson, Marcus Lemon and Thomas each hit safely once while Marrero 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. Marrero tripled, while both Lemon and Thomas posted two-base hits. Thomas was responsible for two RBI and Hayes batted in one run.
