Gwinnett Stripers News Release
Richmond, VA - The Richmond Braves beat the Charlotte Knights 4-0 at The Diamond Tuesday. Three Braves pitchers combined to shut the Knights out as the Braves won their sixth straight game and tossed back to back shutouts for the first time since August, 2005.
The Braves scored the only run they would need in the third without a hit as Martin Prado's fielder's choice ground ball scored Wes Timmons after two walks and a double steal. Richmond broke the game open in the fifth, scoring three runs on six hits. Corky Miller laced an RBI single, Martin Prado tripled a run home, and Yunel Escobar chased a run home with a single.
Meanwhile, Buddy Carlyle tossed six scoreless innings to earn the win. Richmond starting pitchers have now worked 35 straight innings without allowing an earned run. Joe Winkelsas and Buddy Hernandez finished off the Knights. The back-to-back shutouts are the first for the Braves since they blanked Louisville August 22 and 23 of 2005. The six game winning streak is the Braves longest since May 20-25 of 2003.
Escobar had two hits for the Braves. Wiki Gonzalez had two hits for Charlotte. Gavin Floyd was the loosing pitcher. The Braves and Knights continue their series Wednesday at The Diamond at 7 PM. Anthony Lerew will pitch for the Braves against Vladimir Nunez.
The Braves benefit auction of their game worn and autographed Virginia Tech hats has generated more than $3,400 in bids to aid the Hokie Sprit Memorial Fund. The auction runs through May 3. For more information please call 359-4444 or visit www.rbraves.com.
