Brandon Family Wins Backyard Rink Contest
February 24, 2019 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, MB. - They built it and like in the movie 'Field of Dreams' their local hockey heroes will come.
In this case, members of the Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings will be travelling to Brandon's North Hill on Monday afternoon to play a special game of shinny at the backyard rink, belonging to the Gudz family of Brandon.
The Gudz family was chosen this year's Home Depot Backyard Rink winners Sunday from a list of entries received at BDO Fan Services (during Wheat Kings' home games) as well as online.
In addition to having the opportunity to meet the Wheat Kings, the Gudz family will receive treats and prizes from The Home Depot in Brandon.
Big fans of both the Wheat Kings, the Gudz have two hockey playing sons - Mitchell and Jackson - as well as another hockey playing daughter, Karlyn, of the Pee Wee AA Female Wheat Kings.
A member of the Atom A Rangers, Mitchell lists the Vegas Golden Knights as his favorite team and goalkeeper Marc Andre Fleury as his favorite National Hockey League player.
Jackson meanwhile lists Mark Scheifele and Nikita Kucherov of the Winnipeg Jets and Tampa Bay Lighting as his favorites. He currently skates with the AA Midget Wheat Kings.
"I think this will be a great experience for our kids and they were excited when they heard the news," says father Todd, who has been building backyard rinks for the past ten years. "We have been a part of the hockey community for a number of years now and have been attending Wheat King games going back to when I was a kid. The opportunity for our kids and their friends to play shinny with some Wheat King players in our own backyard will be a memorable one!"
The Wheat Kings, who had their season high 6-game winning streak snapped Saturday night in Prince Albert, are back in action this coming weekend with games in Calgary and Edmonton on Friday and Saturday nights. Brandon is currently in a stretch of seven consecutive road games due to the Tim Hortons Brier at the Keystone Centre.
Brandon plays at home next on Wednesday, March 13th - Rain Check Night - against the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors.
Tickets to all of Brandon's two remaining home games go back on sale Monday morning at the Keystone Centre box office. Fans can also order online at www.keystonecentre.com or by calling (204) 726-3555.
