Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- Pittsburgh first baseman/right fielder Brad Eldred has been optioned to Indianapolis, while catcher Humberto Cota has re-joined the Pirates after finishing his Major League rehabilitation assignment.
Eldred earned a spot on Pittsburgh's 2007 Opening Day roster after hitting .303 with club-best six home runs and 13 RBI in 27 Major League Spring Training games. He saw action in just 18 regular-season games this season, hitting .119 (5-for-42) with two roundtrippers and three RBI.
Eldred started the 2006 campaign with Indianapolis, but fractured his left thumb on April 23. The 26-year-old batted .226 with three long balls and 10 RBI in 18 Triple-A contests before the injury.
Eldred became just the third player in baseball history to hit 10 or more home runs at three different levels when he accomplished the feat in 2005. That season, the 6-foot-5, 275-pound slugger batted .333 with 13 HR and 27 in 21 games for Double-A Altoona (Pa.), .282 with 15 HR and 48 RBI in 54 contests for Indianapolis and .221 with 12 HR and 27 RBI in 55 affairs for Pittsburgh.
The Fort Lauderdale, Fla., native is in his sixth season with the Pittsburgh organization after being selected by the Pirates in the sixth round of the 2002 draft.
Cota, who was placed on the Pittsburgh disabled list April 26 with a left shoulder strain, hit .303 (10-for-33) with eight runs and five RBI in 11 Triple-A games during his rehab assignment. The 28-year-old went 3-for-12 with one run and three RBI in four tilts for the Pirates prior to the injury.
