Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, PA - Despite ten hits from Altoona's offense, the Curve fell in the series-opener to the Bowie Baysox, 5-4, on Tuesday night at People's Natural Gas Field.
The Baysox offense put up 11 hits in the contest, including nine off Altoona starter Carmen Mlodzinski (L, 0-3). It did not take long for Bowie to get on the board, with back-to-back doubles from Jordan Westburg and Gunnar Henderson to open the contest.
Bowie later scored two runs in each of the third and fourth innings off Mlodzinski. Westburg and Henderson combined again for back-to-back singles to open the third inning with runners on the corners. Hudson Haskin then hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Bowie's second run. Later in the frame, Cody Roberts hit an RBI-single to score César Prieto, who reached on a single of his own.
Henderson would stay hot at the plate, roping an RBI-double into right field in the fourth to score Cristopher Cespedes. Haskin would bring him home in the next at-bat to round off the scoring for Bowie. Mlodzinski allowed five runs on nine hits in 4.0 innings, striking out two batters.
The Curve received an excellent outing from its bullpen, allowing just two hits over the final five innings. Bear Bellomy tossed three scoreless with one hit allowed. Noe Toribio delivered a scoreless eighth before Tyler Samaniego made his Double-A debut with a scoreless ninth inning and one strikeout.
Altoona scored in the bottom of the first off starter Drew Rom. Jared Triolo opened the frame with a single, and advanced to third on a wild pitch and throwing error from Roberts. After a Nick Gonzales walk, Liover Peguero bounced into an RBI 6-4-3 double play.
Altoona tacked on runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth. After an Aaron Shackelford lead-off double in the fourth, Matt Fraizer hit an RBI-single to bring him home. A run came across in the fifth when Blake Sabol reached on a throwing error by relief pitcher Jensen Elliott (W, 2-0), bringing home Triolo from second base. Fraizer would score in the sixth on a single from Brendt Citta.
Shackelford and Fraizer each recorded three hits in the contest, while Citta and Triolo had two hits. It is the sixth loss this season for Altoona when recording ten hits.
Altoona continues its six-game series with the Bowie Baysox, Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, on Wednesday night at 6:00 p.m.. RHP Mike Burrows will take the ball for the Curbe, with RHP Zach Peek slated for the Baysox.
