Boulders Top Rox In Game One, Game Two Cancelled

Brockton Rox News Release
(Brockton, Mass. - June 23, 2011) - After a two hour and 35 minute rain delay, the Brockton Rox (15-11) and the Rockland Boulders (9-14) were able to play game one of a scheduled doubleheader, with the Boulders claiming a 5-3 victory in seven innings.
Both starters faired well through the first five frames, with Drew Coffey(1-0) holding the Rox hitless over four innings on the way to winning his Can-Am League Debut. Coffey allowed just two hits while walking and striking out five.
Dustin Birosak was equally impressive, hurling five shutout frames in a spot start for the injured Robert Bono. Birosak ended the night with a no decision, giving up three hits while walking one and striking out four.
The Boulders eventually broke the scoreless tie on a two-run double by Cristobal Santana against Jake Hale (0-1) in the sixth inning. Ryan Mollicatacked on another run with an RBI single, plating Santana and making the score 3-0.
Hale took the loss for Brockton, allowing three runs on two hits in 2/3 of an inning.
After leaving the bases loaded in the fifth, the Rox bats finally scratched a run against reliever Michael Gardner in the sixth on a Jorge Jimenezsingle that knocked in Ryan Royster.
Rockland however answered right back, adding some insurance on two unearned runs on one hit in the top of the seventh. Two defensive miscues by the third baseman Jimenez helped contribute to the 5-1 lead.
Boulders closer Adrian Martin (6) ran into trouble in the seventh inning, but hung on to collect the four out save, his league high tying sixth of the season.
In the final half inning, Dominic Ramos reached on an error with one out, followed by a Shawn Williams single. Two batters later, Chris Grossman doubled, driving in Ramos to bring the red hot Keith Brachold to the plate as the tying run.
Rockland Manager Dave LaPoint decided to intentionally walk Brachold, loading the bases for Royster and depriving the rightfielder of a final chance to extend his eleven game hit streak.
Royster went on to single, closing the gap to 5-3 and loading the bases for Jimenez. Jimenez, who had played the walkoff hero earlier this year, flew out to Sean Smith in centerfield to end the threat and seal the win for the Boulders.
The scheduled second seven inning game was cancelled due to Can-Am League curfew regulations and will not be made up as this is the last time these two teams will face off in the first half.
The Rox open a three game weekend series with the New Jersey Jackals Friday night with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. A firework spectacular will follow the opener at Campanelli Stadium.
