
Trezza's Grandslam Not Enough as Bears Come Back with 8-7 Win

Alex Trezza hit a grandslam in the first inning, and the Tornadoes scored three more in the second, but they were held scoreless the rest of the way in an 8-7 Bears win on Thursday night. Newark scored four runs in the bottom of thefirst and four more from the third through the fifth, with Burt Reynolds' two-run homer being the killer blow.
Casey Gaynor picked up the win in his first start for the Bears. Gay or worked five innings, allowing all seven runs, but he allowed just one baserunner after Worcester took the 7-4 lead.
Tornadoes starter Matt Smith left the game in the fourth after giving up five runs. The only runner left on base for the next pitcher, Nick Serino, came in to score on a Daryle Ward RBI double, making it 7-6.
The next inning, Billy Alvino reached on an error by Boomer Blanchard, then Reynolds hit the two-run line shot over the left field fence. Serino suffered the loss, going 4.1 innings, allowing five hits and two runs (one earned).
Newark won the first half season series 4-3 with the victory, and will head north to take on the Quebec Capitales for a weekend set.
The Tornadoes will kick off an eight-game home stand with a doubleheader against the Pittsfield Colonials on Friday, then play two more against them before an off-day Monday. The first pitch of the series is at 5:05, with a 20 minute break in between Friday's seven inning games. The gates will open at 4:00pm.
