Worcester Tornadoes News Release
Zach Zuercher pitched seven scoreless innings and Chris Colabello had three hits in a 4-2 victory over the Newark Bears on Wednesday night. Colabello and Nick Salotti combined for RBI hits in the third inning, staking Worcester to a 2-0 lead. Boomer Blanchard added an RBI single in the fifth, and Colabello knocked another in during the eighth inning, making the score 4-0.
In the top of the ninth, the Bears avoided their second shutout of the year against the Tornadoes. Ryan Walfield allowed a walk and a hit to the only batters he faced, and former Tornadoes right fielder Danny Santiesteban knocked them both in with an RBI double. Rick Asadoorian struck out the next batter, Burt Reynolds, then retired two more in a row to pick up his fourth save of the season.
Zach Zuercher improved to (4-2) with the win, striking out six and walking none. He gave up five hits, recording his sixth decision in as many starts as the Tornadoes ace.
Newark starter Jesse Estrada went 4.1 innings, walking six, striking out two and giving up three runs on seven hits. Three of the first four base knocks for Worcester were for extra bases, as Alex Nunez, Abraham Nunez and Colabello all doubled.
Albert Ayala pitched a 1-2-3 eighth, inducing three groundball outs, before the Bears scored the next inning.
Thanks to his RBI single in the third, Nick Salotti has hits and RBI in four straight games.
The Tornadoes will try for three wins out of four in Newark on Thursday, with the first pitch scheduled for 5:35pm.
