New York Boulders News Release
(Quebec City, Que, July 1) - Josue Peley's fifth hit of the game, a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth, lifted the Quebec Capitales to a 4-3 victory over the Rockland Boulders at Stade Municipal. The Boulders dropped all three games in the weekend set against the first-place hosts by one run, the last two in walk-off fashion.
Just over 12 hours before, the teams completed a 15-inning marathon that saw the Capitales emerge with a 5-4 win. The hosts carried the momentum into the first inning against Boulders starter Pat Moran when Jeff Helps led off with a triple and came in on a Jonathan Malo sacrifice fly. After struggling early, Moran found his rhythm and traded blanks with Quebec hurler as the one-run lead held through the bottom of the sixth.
Quebec extended the lead to 3-0 in the sixth on Steve Brown's two-run shot, scoring Peley, who had singled. The Boulders, who had displayed little offense to that point, got on the board in the seventh when Keith Brachold sent Gelinas' 1-1 offering out of the park for his league-leading 14tth home run of the season. Rockland would claw back to tie the game in the eighth off reliever Maxime St. Pierre.
Reserve catcher Landis Wilson got the ball rolling with a one-out double and came in on Chris Valencia's single. Valencia then stole second and, with two out, raced home with the tying run on Ryan Scoma's base hit off Capitales closer TJ Stanton. Moran battled through eight innings to give Rockland's weary bullpen as much rest as possible, and in a scene reminiscent of the previous night the teams carried a tied score into the ninth.
Stanton worked a scoreless ninth and the Boulders turned the ball over to ace starter Bobby Blevins to come out of the pen for the bottom half. Quebec loaded the bases on two singles and a walk with one out, but Blevins nearly worked out of the jam by fanning Sebastian Boucher before Peley's heroics ended it. Blevins fell to 4-5 with the relief loss, with Stanton picking up the win to improve to 2-0.
The setback dropped the Boulders to 3-4 in their seven-game road trip, and was their third straight loss. After a day off on Monday, the team will return to Rockland for a big three-game holiday series against the New Jersey Jackals on July 3-4-5. The July 3 contest will be 3-D fireworks night, as the first 4,000 fans will receive 3-D glasses with which to enjoy the Fireworks Extravaganza show, courtesy of Ramsey Auto Group. On Wednesday, July 4, the Boulders celebrate with Dollar Hot Dogs as well as a Hot Dog Eating Contest, with a Fireworks Extravaganza show after the game.
