OHL Kingston Frontenacs

Both Bonello and Robertson Have Big Games in 5-1 Win

November 10, 2018 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Kingston Frontenacs News Release

The Oshawa Generals made their second visit to Kingston on Saturday night, making them the first team this season that Frontenacs fans would see for a second time. On September 21, Kingston defeated Oshawa 5-2 in the Frontenacs home opener. Since that night, the Generals added a few players to their lineup that were elsewhere at that time. Jack Studnicka and Kyle Keyser both returned to the Generals after attending Boston Bruins camp. Both players help make the Oshawa Generals a much better team and gave the Frontenacs a little more to worry about.

The Fronts were looking for a quick start, and they got that from one of their leaders. Jason Robertson chased down a puck in the offensive zone and snuck it by Kyle Keyser to put Kingston ahead less than five minutes into the game. That lead was extended before the ten-minute mark. Tyler Burnie found Ryan Cranford on a shorthanded rush and Cranford banked it in off the defenseman's shin pad for a 2-0 Kingston lead. The next time the Frontenacs were shorthanded, it was Oshawa taking advantage. This time Matt Brassard was the one playing billiards as he banked in a pass off of a Kingston players skate. Jack Studnicka had a wide open, shorthanded breakaway later in the period, but Brendan Bonello waited him out and made a difficult save look rather routine to preserve the 2-1 lead. Kingston took that lead with them into the second period.

The second period had no scoring, and that was in large part because of Brendan Bonello. Oshawa had multiple opportunities to tie the game, but Bonello was up to the task each and every time. Oshawa outshot Kingston 15-6 in the period, but the play of Bonello helped Kingston hold on to their 2-1 lead as they headed into the final period.

Kingston had a big third period to ensure a victory. The damage came on a 5 on 3 power play near the midway point of the period. Jason Robertson added his second of the game to extend Kingston's lead to 3-1 and leave 1:43 on the second penalty. Kingston didn't need the full amount of that power play time either. Brett Neumann made it 4-1 less than a minute later to give the Frontenacs a comfortable lead. Oshawa made a desperate attempt to come from behind by pulling the goalie with 8:00 left on the clock, but Brendan Bonello kept the door closed and Jason Robertson hit the empty net for his 8th career hat trick. The Fronts would beat their division rival 5-1 on this night.

It was the second time this season that Kingston has scored five goals against Oshawa on home ice. Jason Robertson's hat trick was his second of the week. He also scored three goals on Wednesday in Ottawa.

The Frontenacs do not play again until Friday, November 16 when they host the Mississauga Steelheads on Hall of Fame Night. Fans will be able to take pictures with both the Stanley Cup and Memorial Cup at Leon's Centre throughout the evening. Tickets can be purchased at ticketmaster.ca.
