THE STAKES:

This is a departure from the division for both teams, but one should not discount the importance of this game.

The Battlewings share first place in the af2 Southwest, although they have a slight edge over Rio Grande Valley because the Battlewings won the earlier head-to-head match-up.

The Wildcats are in first place in the af2 South and are trying to hold off the always-tough Florida Firecats.

S. Georgia won the head-to-head 49-38 two weeks ago.

THE SERIES: The Battle Wings won the only encounter between these teams in Bossier City, 62-61 on April 18, 2003.

Last season in South Georgia, the Wildcats won 51-22.

THE IFs:

If the BattleWings defeat South Georgia, it would ...

- Allow the BattleWings to hang on to 1st place in the division, no matter what happens with RGV,

- Increase the BattleWings' 2007 home winning streak to 5.

- Give Jon Norris a 17-8 record as an af2 head coach.

- Give the Wings a two-game winning streak.

FAMILIAR FACES:

Battle Wings' leading receiver Jamaal Perry played for South Georgia last season and caught five passes for 87 yards and three touchdowns against the Battle Wings.

Two former Southern Jaguars, OL/DL Kentrell Blatcher and WR Scott Coleman, are on the Wildcats roster. First year coach Derek Stingley has made over this team, which had 3-13 records in 2005 and 2006.

LAST TIME THEY MET:

It was a miserable trip for the Battlewings, who went to South Georgia to play a team that had won just one of its 12 games in 2006. The Wildcats won 51-22. The bright spot in that game for the Wings was wide receiver Anthony Chambers, who caught 6 passes for 74 yards and a touchdown. He also had 75 kick return yards.

Jason Schule made his BattleWings debut in that game, carrying the ball 4 times for 16 yards.

HEAD COACHES:

Jon Norris, Bossier - Shreveport: (First season)

Jon Norris came to the BattleWings from the Austin Wranglers of the AFL where he served as the Defensive Coordinator and Line Coach. He made a demonstrative difference in Austin where in 2005, the offensive line gave up only 4 sacks which led the AFL. Norris spent 3 seasons with the Dallas Desperados in the AFL where he served as line coach and special teams coach. His line racked up some impressive stats, both offensively and defensively. Under Norris' leadership, Will Pettis led AFL with 88 kickoff returns for 1750 yards and 4 TD's. Norris moved to Dallas after a stint as assistant head coach and offensive and defensive line coach for the Oklahoma Wranglers. His Oklahoma defense finished 3rd in AFL with 21 sacks.

Norris served as head coach for the Tulsa Talons (af2) and led them to the playoffs in their inaugural season with an offense that averaged 52.7 points per game and a defense that led the league with 33 interceptions

Norris spent time in the NFL with the New England Patriots in 1984 and 1985. He played for the Chicago Bears in 1987 and 1988. Norris is married with two sons.

Derek Stingley, South Georgia Wildcats

- Experience: Played in Arena Football League for eight seasons and was head coach of af2 Macon Knights in 2005 and 2006

- Of note: Derek Stingley is son of Darryl Stingley, the wide receiver for New England who was paralyzed by a hit from Oakland's Jack Tatum in 1978.

- He began an eight-year stint in the Arena Football League. In 1999, he helped the Albany Firebirds win the ArenaBowl championship.

- Stingley is ranked in the AFL's top-10 all-time in tackles (443.5) and pass breakups (110).His last season in the AFL was 2004.

THIS WEEK'S QUOTES:

Jon Norris, on the Wildcats:

"They have one of the best quarterback-receiver combinations in af2. They have a potent running game, and their defensive backfield is strong. Their coach has really turned the team around. They mirror us in many ways. Once again, we face a tough challenge against one of the strongest teams we will face all season."

TEAM NOTES/TRENDS:

Everything is trending up for the Battlewings. Fullback Jason Schule continues to be among league leaders in rushing average and yards per carry, as well as rushing touchdowns. The play of quarterback Gary Cooper against Manchester was encouraging.

The Battlewings' defensive line is among the best in the league. Elex Reed and Reggie Hargove got sacks against Manchester. Reed continues to lead the league in sacks and tackles for loss.

PLAYERS/MATCHUPS TO WATCH:

Can the Battle Wings' defensive backfield contain Chavis McCollister? Can Gary Cooper rise to the occasion at quarterback again this week? Will the Wildcats key on Jason Schule?

*Manchester was credited with a sack against Gary Cooper on a designed run. Assuming the stat will be corrected, the Battle Wings will be alone at #1 with just two sacks allowed. If the stat stands, they will be tied for #1 with 3 sacks.

MILESTONES:

The Battle Wings are seeking the second winning season in franchise history. The team's best season was 9-7. The Battle Wings, in six af2 seasons, have yet to reach the playoffs.

The Battlewings are in the middle of the team's longest-ever home winning streak.

Quincy Carter tied a franchise record with seven touchdown passes against Rio Grande Valley.

The Battle Wings have won as many games in 2007 as they did over the last two seasons combined.

FORWARD MOTION:

The Battlewings will be in suburban Houston next weekend to play the winless Texas Copperheads.

HIGH NOON:

Gary Cooper made his debut at QB for the BattleWings against Manchester. The former Booker T. Washington star who played at Grambling threw five touchdown passes to five different receivers. He is expected to start against the Wildcats.
